Vamped-up jazz gets its skates on for saucy show

By Claire Low

Billed as "too darn hot to handle", and described as a more modern, vamped-up version of its predecessory, Canberra Repertory's Old Time Music Hall, parts of Jazz Garters are somewhat saucy, its choreographer says.

The variety show directed by Jim McMullen has a few numbers that are "a little bit sexier" than Old Time Music Hall, according to Lisa Buckley.

"We do have a number in there where the girls are dressed quite...minimally towards the end," she said.

That aside, the show is still most definitely a family evening out featuring "lots of giggles, lots of laughts, and lots of comedy".

The variety show, as its name suggests, features a great deal of diversity: Buckley, who won a Canberra Area Theatre Award last year for her efforts with the inaugural Jazz Garters, has put together tap dances, a jive and a soft shoe routine. At one point in the show, performers will do a number on roller skates.

Old-school variety show fans needn't worry - while modernised, a vaudeville section with classic performances remains.

Jazz Garters is on at Theatre 3, Acton (Ellery Crescent) from Friday to July 10. From Thursday to Saturday it starts at 8pm, Saturday matinees at 2pm on June 26, July 3 and July 10. Twilight performances are on June 27 and July 4 at 4pm. Tickets cost $27-$25[sic]. For bookings: 6257 1950 or www.canberrarep.org.au.
