’Logues: (pronounced logs), as in logs of wood; short for mono and duo ‘logues
2012 is the 80th anniversary of Canberra Repertory Society, and the fifth time Canberra Rep STUDIO has presented a variation of the 'Logues competition. The ‘Logues is primarily a competition for writers, who submit short theatrical pieces for reading at one of five heats. Scripts receiving the most votes in each heat progress to finals and are performed on the main stage. These final performances provide the opportunity for emerging authors to see their work go from the page to the stage.
In 2011, the ‘Logues broadened in scope to provide the opportunity for novice directors to shape performances for an audience. Rep STUDIO will be seeking expressions of interest from novice directors for the 2012 season.

When are the heats and finals?
The heats will be held on five consecutive Sundays from 29 January 2012 in the foyer of Theatre 3. Heats begin at 1pm and generally run for less than two hours.
Heat 1 – Sunday 29 January
Heat 2 – Sunday 5 February
Heat 3 – Sunday 12 February
Heat 4 – Sunday 19 February
Heat 5 – Sunday 26 February
Finals will take place on:
- Friday 25 May at 8pm
- Saturday 26 May at 8pm
- Sunday 27 May at 2pm
Winners will be announced and prizes presented following the final Sunday performance.
What is this competition for (and who will be interested)?
- Writers who create short scripts and want to hear and possibly see these scripts performed. In the heats, they will be read out loud. If they make the final, they will be directed and performed as part of a season of short plays produced by Canberra Repertory STUDIO. As a writer you are also able to anonymously hear thoughts and feedback on your work at the weekly heats.
- PLEASE NOTE: Writers who are accustomed to creating work that is solely for reading should think carefully before submitting a piece to the 'Logues. Even a monologue should be looked at for its performance potential. Good words alone don't always translate into a good play.
- Actors who want a slightly different experience from the normal three months commitment to a major show. There are two ways of being involved. The first is to contribute as a reader during the weekly heats, which requires very little commitment or preparation (other than arriving early on the day to read a script). The second is to perform in the finals, which will require several rehearsals and three performances.
- Audience members who neither write nor want to perform, but are interested to see new short works, cast a vote and maybe join in the feedback session we have for each play. The more people we have, the more viewpoints we have.
- This is part of Rep STUDIO and STUDIO likes to offer a variety of theatre workshops, productions and activities in which new and seasoned actors, directors, backstage crew and writers can come together, developing and refining skills in a creative and collaborative atmosphere. The more the merrier!
